I first heard of Rolfing through a book I discovered on a high shelf in ‘The Reading Nook’, a cozy bookstore in Ireland that I liked to visit. Learning about the fascial matrix, I was fascinated to read how emotional blocks and fearful negative beliefs can become hardwired in the connective tissue of the body. I was intrigued to discover that unconsciously conforming to society’s expectations can convince us to take residence in the shape of a repressed posture. My biggest epiphany was to realize how the conditioned practice of ‘armoring’ suppresses feelings and sensation in our body causing us to separate from our authentic Self, leaving no option but to take up residence in a landscape of false identification.
I realized, it’s impossible to expand into the fullness of authentic capacity when our biology is relentlessly enforcing constriction. This shrinking is the primary cause of living as someone we’re not. We acquiesce to trading our authenticity for attachment to a secondary personality, an identification based on prioritizing the needs of others. Our authentic disappearance fractures our ability to be seen, heard and felt, to be fully experienced within relationship with Self and others.
Lacking authentic identification, we spend time as an imposter, a mere tourist in our own life. Our false Self attracts relationship in the hope of having the inauthentic part of us be recognized and loved. We spend our life not being known, valued and appreciated for who we truly are. Trading our authenticity, our ability to feel and sense our libidinal birthright, we experience a deadening of consciousness that conceals our gifts, our voice and our needs. We spend our living, missing the person we were never free to truly become.
Rolfing uses bodywork, focused body oriented dialogue, kinesthetic movement, guided breathwork, to release long held contractions, emotions, mental constructs and narratives that have up until now caused us to lose connection with the authentic core residing deep within.
The truth is, achieving new competencies, new actions, new ways of responding to life’s pressures and opportunities, cannot change through conversational therapy alone. Habitual patterns that are held in the body are so resistant, trying to establish new patterns without interrupting and softening the old ones is like attempting to plant seeds in arid ground. Unless there is a somatic shift those well established and deeply ingrained neural pathways will continually override our attempt to introduce any new option for change.

“Your body stores the trauma of your life in muscular rigidity thereby keeping you stuck in your past. When you release tension in your body and align yourself with gravity, you take a stand in life. This allows you to be at ease with yourself and in harmony in your relationship to others and to the planet.”

I first met Moylan when he was working with our team during spring training at the Talking Stick Arena. I saw how much improvement his approach was able to bring to the performance of my fellow players. I decided to go through a series of Rolfing sessions and Movement Education that helped me experience a greater range of motion and ease in my performance as a professional player.
FAQs
Who should consider Rolfing Structural Integration?
Rolfing is for every ‘Body’ who seeks to enhance their overall body condition and functionality.
For those who are looking to feel more “At Home” in their body through the process of restoring flexibility, increased balance, revitalized energy and greater ease of movement.
Rolfing helps to create a more comfortable and intimate relationship with the body, thereby contributing to the attainment of a higher level of emotional wellbeing.
Does Rolfing hurt?
The intensity experienced during the Rolfing process is transitory, moving quickly from brief intensity to a decrease in sensation and finally to an easing of long-standing embodied holdings which can prove to be profound and transformative.
In order for change to take place in the body-mind, the Rolfing practitioner invites you to move beyond your comfort zone, to discover your edge, a threshold of expansion, to enter a portal of new and greater capacity. In this role, the Rolfer becomes the ‘Midwife’ of your greater potential.
What is the Rolfing Ten Series?
Rolfing Structural Integration is experienced through a series of sessions, each focusing on freeing restrictions or holdings in specific areas of the body.
The goal of the ten series is to systematically balance and optimize both the structure (shape) and function (movement) of the entire body.
Integration is emphasized throughout the series, each session building on the last with a view of creating smooth movement and natural coordination.
Does Rolfing Structural Integration relieve stress?
The focus of my Rolfing is to bring greater ease to the body and the psyche. The body when balanced experiences more comfort and ease in the gravitational field. There is a pronounced decrease in embodied tension which allows for emotional stress to diminish.
What should I wear?
Men should wear sports shorts.
Women should wear Yoga attire or sports shorts and bra. Clothing that allows access to tissues.
What about the Emotional and Psychological effects of Rolfing?
It is impossible to touch the physical body without touching the emotional body.
The process of Rolfing may evoke repressed memories or experiences that arise.
The Rolfing container provides a safe environment for the expression of such emotion, focusing to integrate the experience into the physical and emotional body in a way that promotes maximum resolution and minimal trauma to the system.
